Keyboard Shortcuts:

With the following keystrokes if the keystroke is listed as Ctrl + S. You Do Not press the plus sign key at all. This is the way that the keystroke is explained. It means Hold down the Ctrl and the S key together. The easiest way to do this is to hold down the Ctrl key then type the other key. If two control keys are involved (Ctrl + Shift) then hold down both these keys and type the other key once. Remember once you have learned the ones useful to you and you use them instead of the mouse pointer they will work in many other applications.

SHOPPING ON LINE - padlock

To ensure you're sending your information over a secure connection, check that a locked padlock is in the bottom right corner of the web page.

1. That the Web address begins with https rather than just http, [s = secure site] or

2. That a padlock is displayed, usually at the bottom of the page.

The above screenshot was taken from the Westpac Bank site.

3. If a site is insecure some browsers may show an open padlock.

Double click on the padlock to check details about the site owner and to see if it is up to date.

The padlock encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name and address so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet.

Downloaded Software:

People that download trial software (usually shareware) ask me how they can reload the software in working order after un-installing it? This is the easiest thing in the world to fix, in fact I would go as far as to say no fix is simpler even for a very basic novice. The fix.

BUY THE SOFTWARE OR FORGET ABOUT USING IT!

Which Is The Better Search Engine, Google, Yahoo! or Bing?

I get asked on a regular basis what search engine should a person use, or which is the best one to use? The answer to the question is similar to asking which food mixer should I use or which car should I drive? My usual answer is to say use the one you feel at ease with, or whichever you have found to be the best for delivering up results. However, something that can be a further guide is to use a commercial test of search engines these are the results of a test carried out during 2009 bearing in mind things change in the computer world on a daily basis.

Statistics showed how Bing soared with flying results. But isn't it said there are lies then there are lies and then there are statistics?
"Citigroup" has put together a table of results using a query of different categories to see which one came out on top. The winner is…

Google! The result shows that Google is a much better at returning relevant data than Bing or Yahoo. Here is the listing of results
-Google 71%
-Bing 49%
-Yahoo 30%

If you haven't heard of Bing it's a reasonably new Microsoft engine and is still climbing up the ladder of preferred and better search engines.

Are they Favorites Or Bookmarks?

When my Son talks to me about the Internet browser he always mentions Bookmarks - I can't find Bookmarks in my menus on Microsoft Internet Explorer. Can you tell me what he means I don't like to keep asking him, "What's that?"

It's very simple really, you have answered the question for yourself but don't know that you have. MS Internet Explorer uses the word Favorites (it's American spelling) while Mozilla Firefox calls them Bookmarks. Bookmarks comes from the old Netscape program on which Mozilla Firefox was based so they stcuk with the reference name. Bookmarks and Fovorites are one and the same thing. We fill our cars up with petrol while in America they fill up with gas, but they are both one and the same thing.

Reading Badly Coloured Text

Ever been on a web site where the text and the background colour are almost the same? I'm colour blind and where the background colour is dark blue and the text is dark red I find it impossible to distinguish one from the other. The small frame below is impossible for me to see. I used to get my wife to do it for me but there is a way to do it when she is not there or busy.

This is what I mean

Just use the Ctrl + A Key combination and you will see the wording is shown up in white. Try it on the above and you will see.

Working In Full Screen

If you would like to see more web page and no browser toolbars, you can do this. Type the F11 key. It will display your full screen mode for the site. To bring your browser back to normal type the F11 key again. This works in either Internet Explorer or Firefox if you use another browser check out your help files. One complaint people tend to have with full screen mode is that you don't have stuff like your address or menu bar. With Internet Explorer it's possible you can see this do the following.
Right-click a blank area of the toolbar.

A menu will pop up that lets you add your address bar, menu bar, and any other Explorer bars you feel the need to have. Select only those you require at the moment.

You only have a small amount of space to play with so don't try and see every one available or you defeat the purpose of the selection Full Screen.

Print Pictures Without Saving

It's possible to print a picture that you have found on the web without saving it first. Obviously this can be done more than once in the same session of the browsing but once you leave the site then you will need to reopen it to print the picture again.
Using Internet Explorer you need to right-click the image and from the drop down menu select "Print Picture".

With Firefox do exactly the same thing, right-click the picture and choose "View Image" this places the picture in its own window, now you need to select Print Page, Print All from the Printer dialog box.

Where Are My Downloads?

Whenever you download a file you need to know where it has gone, in other words where on your hard drive it has been saved. I have set my browser downloads to be saved into a folder called New Software, which is on my C: Drive. Mostly I download freeware software and if it's something else I know where to look for it.
If you can't find a downloaded file in the usual place, try to download again and you'll see the location under the "Save in" field. Most browsers remember where your most recent download was saved. Hit "Cancel" once you know the location. Navigate to the location and that's where it will be.

In Firefox, all you need to do to find your recent download is go to Tools>Downloads (also accessible by pressing Ctrl+J) and right-click on the download in question and choose "Open Containing Folder".
