Most users use Google to search the Internet but it is not always the best engine for the job. Listed below are others that you may like to try.

All The Web

This engine has the options of searching for different pieces of information. It will try to get to the item you want with very little effort on your part. Click on the News Tab and type in the word London - The search result will be a list of news and news sites from London. Click the Tab to Web without changing the word London and different web sites dealing with London will be listed. Click the Pictures Tab and a whole list of pictures will be presented in thumbnail form, click on them to enlarge the picture.

Ask Jeeves

This engine is pretty good at getting data from the keywords and can answer questions (or tries to) such as. What's the largest city in Peru? It will of course come up with Lima but along with this will be a whole feast of data about cities in Peru. Ask Jeeves is a very good site for those just learning the art of using search engines.

Ask Jeeves For Kids

If you've got grandchildren over to stay and want to keep them safe on the net this is the place to go. A human being has vetted every site listed on this search engine. The engine will not point you out to an unsafe site inadvertently as some engines will do. You can also ask questions in plain English and get them answered like - How long does an elephant live?
The average housefly lives for between 15 and 25 days, unless of course you swat or spray them. Their life cycle is not long enough for them to be pets.

Wikipedia

The world's largest encyclopaedia with thousands of articles but it also carries a search engine. Some of the articles have some outrageous claims and comments but you can use your loaf about these. Articles can be added to and/or edited. It is necessary to register to do this.

How Search Engines Work

There is a very good article on how search engines work - they aren't all the same and don't use the same algorithms to extract the results. It's well worth clicking the link just to read this article it may answer the reason you never seem to get the result that you expected from a search.

Yahoo

The name Yahoo comes from Swift's novel Gullivers Travels but the search engine used to be a popular one about 10 years back but Google gradually became more popular. However, this search enmgine still has a lot to offer. One of the nice things about the site is the listings down the left-hand-side do not have to be clicked to see them. Just by running your mouse over one and hovering the listing will display. If you click on the Weather you will automatically be given Wellington's forcast and the temperatures are in farenheit not Centigrade scale. Take a look at yahoo it's well worth the trip.

Yahooligans

There is also another Yahoo but it's not really a search Engine it is however a good site for kids called Kids Yahoo some time ago it was known as Yahooligans.
