Freeware Software
Freeware means it is in fact free, it is not a piece of trial only software, which most downloadable software is. A short description is also given about the software.
This is a very fast zip file utility - it also contains a very fast backup zipping facility, which can back up to a zip drive I downloaded about 6 gigabytes of data in less than an hour to an 8 gigabyte flash drive. I can supply my own manual to anyone that wishes to have an English language manual, as the program is Italian.
A very good Office Suite set of programs. It is a very large program to down load at 136 - 140MB. It can be obtained on CD. The CD media and delivery does bear a cost while the program is free of charge. This office suite does not have all the bells and whistles that Microsoft Office has but it does contain a database and does some other processes better than MS. Sometimes contained on magazine DVDs.
It is not good operating practice to mess around with the Registry on your computer but there are plenty of things that get left behind by deleting software and by application programs. These registry details are not required and can slow down the computer. This free utility will clean up your registry safely it will also clean up unwanted files and do a temporary files clean-up including the recycle bin. It will remove spyware from your computer. These are all I use the utility for on a regular basis about once a week to ten days. They can be done with a one-click operation. I can offer advice on its use if required.
Ever uninstalled a program or a piece of software that you loaded for a trial? Often you get the message that some files could not be uninstalled when you used the Windows uninstaller via the control panel. Revo Uninstaller does away with all that and cleans the registry completely just by following the instructions. Since I installed it about two years ago I have never used the Windows uninstaller again.
Considered by many users and magazines to be better than Internet Explorer, this is a matter of opinion from both sides of the fence. Personally I have used it since it first came out because I found the MS software to be vulnerable to virus writers (Anti virus software will only clean what it know about!) The browser has used Tab viewing for about three years, well before MS added it to their browser and although many magazines advise MS is catching up to Firefox browsing it will always be behind because it has many more people writing Add Ons - some of which are very good while others are mediocre
In my opinion one of the best email programs around - it can handle more than one email account for a user from different ISPs and has a whole bevy of add-ons, one of the best being a Diary with appointments available down to five minute intervals for those that need it. The appointments or events can be made permanent or to act from a starting date to an ending date. This diary is compatible with the MS Outlook Email and Diary. If you don't have MS Office Professional, which includes Outlook then this is a good money saver replacement.
This is a separate backup utility
for backing up your Firefox and Thunderbird Browser and Email. It must be
emphasised that this is not for Microsoft Internet Explorer or Outlook Express!
This is strictly for the Mozilla software products.
It allows you to backup and restore bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions,
cache etc. It's an easy way to do Firefox and Thunderbird backups...
Listed by most popular computer magazines as the best firewall around including all those that come at a cost. You do need to purchase Zone Alarm for a business the freeware is for Home Use only. A firewall places a wall between you and the Internet both ways. You are required to say which of your on board programs may access the Internet this allows access inwards and outwards. Any program not listed will be stopped until it is allowed. This means unwanted access to your computer is prevented from entering. You install it and forget it. It is 38MB in size so if you are still on dial-up get it from another source. CDs on magazines carry it quite often keep your eyes open for it.
A good anti virus program to
have on your computer, which will alert you to any nasties that may be lurking
around waiting to attack. On this site move down to below the Registration
note and select the program you require. There are several languages available
from English through to Turkish. The program does require you to register
each year but this is free of charge. Providing you register you will get
automatic updates each time one is written, these include not only the database
of viruses to check for but the program updates as well.
Another well known and trusted anti virus and anti spy ware program, this is free only to private users although they may pay for the full program, which gives extra protection. Many users use only the freeware version and are quite satisfied with it. You will notice when the computers are started in the classroom often the anti virus program will move into action to update itself. I would recommend any of our members that don't have an anti virus program loaded on their machine or if their program is not being updated then you should load one of the above for anti virus protection.
This is a Google photo editor and organising program, I haven't personally used it or seen it in use but like all of Google stuff it is freeware and it could be a good photo editor to start you off.
Another graphics freeware program, originally written for the Linux operating system but is now freely available for Windows. Make sure if you download The Gimp that you get the Windows version because the Linux version will not work. The program is well documented and the documentation can be downloaded from the same source. This program is quite sophisticated and can handle most things that can be done in professional graphic programs such as Photoshop.
This is a touch-typing keyboarding skill program it will not teach you to touch type at 60 words per minute. If that's your requirement go to a secretary's course and learn, but if you are over the age of 35 years you've left it a bit late. This course with as little as 15 minutes a day practice will get you typing pretty skilfully at about 20 - 30 words a minute. A word is measured as being 5 letters long. The program like all the others on this page is freeware for educational institutions or private use. The lessons can be changed to other material. I have one or two different files and can supply them to anyone interested. I can also show you how to change them.
